ChatGPT Ads in India: What They Cost, How to Set Up, and Who Should Try Them
yes, ChatGPT ads are live in India, and you can start with ₹725 a day. Whether you should is a different question. That's what this post is about.
What exactly launched in India?
In late August 2026, OpenAI started showing ads inside ChatGPT in India. Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans see them. Go costs ₹399 a month here. If someone pays for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education, they won't see ads at all.
The ad shows up below the answer, with a sponsored label. OpenAI says ads don't change what ChatGPT answers, and that ads won't appear next to sensitive topics like health, mental health or politics.
So think of it like this: someone asks ChatGPT "best CRM for a small clinic", gets an answer, and underneath there's a relevant sponsored result. Same idea as Google, different place.
Can a small business actually buy these ads?
Now yes. At launch, buying went only through OpenAI's ads team and agency partners (WPP and Omnicom were the first two named). Then on 4 September, the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opened for Indian advertisers at ads.openai.com.
The minimum daily budget is ₹725. Honestly, that's what makes this interesting. A small Google or Meta test costs about the same. So the real risk isn't money. It's your time and attention.
How ChatGPT ads are structured
If you've run Google Ads, this will feel familiar:
- Campaign: your objective, budget, dates and targeting. In India you currently pick between Clicks and Conversions.
- Ad group: ads grouped around one theme or intent.
- Ad: the title, description, image and landing page people see.
You can build campaigns step by step, or upload in bulk if you're managing many. Reporting covers impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and conversions (if you've set up conversion tracking). It's decent, but not as deep as Google Ads yet.

How to set up your first campaign
- Go to ads.openai.com and create your Ads Manager account.
- Add your billing details. Nothing runs without this.
- Create a campaign. Choose Clicks if you're just testing, Conversions only if tracking is properly installed.
- Set a daily budget (start at the ₹725 minimum) and confirm location is India.
- Build one ad group around one clear intent, like "GST billing software for small shops". Don't mix five offers.
- Write the ad like a helpful answer, not a banner. People are in a research mood here.
- Point it to a landing page that matches the ad. Not your homepage.

Ads vs. getting recommended by ChatGPT: not the same thing
This is where people get confused. Paying for an ad does not make ChatGPT mention your brand in its answer. Those are two separate things.
Getting named inside the answer comes from GEO, which means clear content, real expertise, consistent brand mentions and good structure. We've covered how that works for Google in our guide to ranking in Google AI Mode and in how buried websites are getting traffic from AI Mode.
If I had to pick one first, I'd pick GEO, because it keeps working after you stop paying. Then I'd run a small ads test next to it.
Who should test ChatGPT ads now
Good fit:
- Software, education, consulting and B2B services, where people research before buying
- Ecommerce brands with clear product comparisons
- Anyone whose customers already use ChatGPT to shortlist options
Better to wait:
- Local walk-in businesses with a tiny radius
- Finance, insurance and health. Reportedly these face manual review, not instant approval
- Anyone without conversion tracking set up
Where we stand at Shine Aspire: We haven't run a live ChatGPT ads campaign for a client yet, and I'd rather say that than pretend otherwise. The platform opened for Indian advertisers only a few weeks ago, so any "proven results" you read right now should be taken carefully. What we have been doing is working with clients on SEO and GEO, and watching which kinds of businesses are already getting named in AI answers. Our plan is a small, tracked test first, and we'll update this post with what we actually see.
Mistakes I'd avoid
- Judging it in 3 days. The platform is only weeks old in India, so nobody has trustworthy benchmarks yet. Be careful with any post that claims to have them.
- Moving your Google or Meta budget over. Test with fresh money.
- Sending traffic to a slow, confusing page. The ad can't fix that.
- Skipping tracking. If you can't measure it, don't scale it.
The bottom line
ChatGPT ads are early, cheap to test, and worth a small experiment if your customers research on AI tools. They're not a replacement for SEO or GEO. Treat them as one more channel.
